Land mafia eyes Mulk Raj Anand’s Gurgaon property
The land mafia is eyeing the prime property of literary giant late Dr Mulk Raj Anand located in a highly priced Gurgaon area.
Alarmed by the repeated attempts of some property dealers to usurp the estate of one of the earliest Indian writers in English language, Sahib Ram Sehrawat, the Anands’ legal representative has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court through a PIL to ensure protection of the land and to prevent its forcible possession.
The counsel contended an FIR was lodged on October 27, 2007 against the encroachers but the police did not take any action.
A Division Bench directed the Gurgaon SSP to complete the investigation within two months and file a challan, if necessary, in the court. The Bench directed no encroachment be allowed in the property.
Anand died on September 28, 2004 leaving behind his lone heir and daughter Sushila Rajani Kumari Anand, who also died last year. She had written a will, leaving the property to Sudhir Sehrawat of Cardiff, UK and the petitioner Sahib Ram Sehrawat as the sole executor of the will.
The petitioner submitted it was in this context and authorisation that he filed the PIL as he also had been approved as such by High Court of Justice, London. After the hearing, the Bench disposed of the writ petition with further direction to police authorities of Gurgaon to make adequate arrangements to protect the property.
